LORNE CALVERT ENDORSES TOPP TO LEAD NDP
Former Sask Premier says Topp knows what he stands for, can win in Quebec and across Canada
Saskatoon -- Former Saskatchewan Premier, Lorne Calvert today endorsed Brian Topp to become the next leader of the New Democratic Party of Canada.
Calvert said that he is endorsing Topp because he believes the party needs a leader who knows what he stands for and who can win throughout the country.
“Brian grew up in Quebec and knows how to build on our Quebec breakthrough,” said Calvert. “He has deep roots in Saskatchewan where he started his family and worked at the heart of our NDP government. And he has helped build the party right across the country, from B.C. to Newfoundland.
"Brian is the kind of national leader the NDP needs to get the job done and defeat Stephen Harper.”
Calvert said that he has been impressed with the boldness of Topp’s message and the depth of his policy announcements.
“Brian understands that New Democrats have to dream big dreams and then lay out a plan to get there one practical step at a time,” said Calvert. “He is the only candidate to lay out a serious plan to re-balance Canada’s tax system to ensure everyone is paying their fair share.”
“I believe that’s the kind forthright leadership Canadians are looking for -- a leader who has the courage of their convictions and knows what they stand for."
“Lorne brings invaluable experience to our campaign,” said Topp. “As a former Premier, he understands better than anyone what it takes to govern well and for a larger purpose. I am deeply honoured to have his support and I am looking forward to working with him in the months ahead.”
